86, 84, 82 … these are some of the top yields in the first South Dakota Soybean Yield Contest sponsored by the South Dakota Soybean Association.
Larry Klumb, Ethan, S.D., had the highest yield — 86.783 bushels per acre.
Sam Waldner, Carpenter, S.D.,produced 84.860 bushels per acre.
Frank Kralicek, Yankton, S.D.,posted 82.250 bushels per acre.
There many 60- to 80-bushel-per-acre yields in the contest, which was divided into nine different categories based on soybean maturity levels and farming methods (see table).
Farmers sent more than 100 entries to the contest. First-place winners received a $1,000 cash prize and up to $1,500 toward a trip to attend the annual American Soybean Association and National Corn Growers Association Commodity Classic in March. Second- and third-place winners received $500 and $300 respectively.
“South Dakota is a top soybean growing state, and we wanted to give our farmers a chance to highlight their exceptional soybean yields,” says Chris Fischbach, a Mansfield, S.D., farmer and president of the South Dakota Soybean Association. “I would like to congratulate all of the winners, and compliment them on their hard work and innovative methods.”
The yield contest also is an excellent source of agronomic information about new technology and farming practices, adds David Ricks, SDSA industry representative.
“The contest can help farmers produce higher yields and grow better soybeans across the state,” Ricks says.
